Ambient Light: A Scene Spun From Nothing

About this work
In 2017, poet Steve Meyers invited a diverse group of artists to each choose one of his poems and create a work of art in response. His poem "Ambient Light" resonated — especially the lines: "...the way the daylight fell and stunned the lemons yellow in the bowl" and "...and now, pure focal and non-sonic, the scene spun from nothing."
The painting shows a blue-and-white Ming cup, a lemon with its peel curling away, a scattering of red currants, and a roemer wineglass — objects gathered from the Dutch cabinet tradition and arranged in the raked, amber light the poem describes. Meyers then mounted an exhibition of all the artwork and poems displayed side by side.
