Single Manual Italian Harpsichord by Kevin Fryer, San Francisco 1988
In the school of Grimaldi.
This represents the second collaborative effort between Kevin Fryer and myself.
Kevin built this instrument several years ago and uses it as a rental instrument.
Over the years it had gotten pretty scraped up, so we decided to give it an overhaul.
Kevin came up with and applied the base colors, two shades of red for the exterior,
and yellow for the inside of the lid. Both are oil-based japan colors. Since the
instrument is modeled on instruments of the Italian school, we opted for a motif based
on Italian Renaissance designs. The composition is entirely original but is inspired by
the work of Rafael, Giovanni Bazzi (called il Sodoma), and Alessandro Allori. The figures
are painted in gouache, and Kevin applied a crackle varnish as well as a warm,
umber-tinted glaze over the inside of the lid.
